Fell Championship 2024 – Event 10 – Danefield Relay – report and results

4th July 2024

Round 10 of the Fell Champs saw a trip to Otley Chevin and the Danefield Relay. Before we get onto the results, it was great to have 21 Striders running, which meant 7 relay teams of 3 people. It was an unusual race, given the relay format, with 2/3 not starting at the gun, but eagerly waiting for our teammates to appear around the corner to tag your hand. It felt pleasantly old school and mildly chaotic at the same time! It also meant that those heading off 3rd had heard from the 1st member of their team how the course was, spoiler alert it had a big hill at the end! I will begrudgingly (!) thank the cheering crew on the last hill, who had already finished who breeched the private suffering to take some photos! I think I would fill the role of the Troll under the bridge very well, looking at my picture! My other favourite is Kerry looking like she had seen a ghost! On a personal note I was pleasantly surprised on the journey home to get a message from Sarah (Glover) that we had come 3rd in the Mixed Vets team, along with Dave.

Below are the official results.

Danefield Relay Results

Will took his 4th win from 4 races this year and remains in 5th overall. It is worth noting that the minimum event completion in the Fell Champs is 6 races, so he will need to complete at least another 2 to catch those ahead of him. Dan took his 3rd podium of the year and also remains static in the standings in 6th. Craig Macauley made his 1st appearance in this year’s Fell Champs with a 3rd place, there is still time to complete 6 races with 7 races left, plus the wildcard opportunity. At the top of the standings Phil and Steve didn’t improve their overall scores. In the mid table Adam jumped 4 places, Craig Mitchell jumped a place and I jumped 3 places, having completed our 2nd events of the year. It was also great to see Dave, Guy and Stewart complete their first race of the 2024 Fell Champs. On that note, although it made my job harder to find the results(!), I did like the team name “Guy Loves Fells”, it felt very appropriate!

Sima took her 2nd win of the year and was also 10th in her age category. This means she sits at the top of the standings. We now have 3 ladies who have completed 2 events, of the required 6 to be in the final standings, so anyone could win it! Paula was the only other repeat finisher and moves up a spot into 3rd overall. It was really tight, between the top 3, on age grading result, with Nicola and Carla filling out the podium. It was also great to see Claire, Debbie, Gosia, Sarah Glover, Sarah Gummer and Kerry complete their first race of the 2024 Fell Champs.

The next event is Ingleborough on Saturday 20th July 2024
