Club Championship 2024 – Event 7 – Melmerby 10k – report and results

6th May 2024

Round 7 of the Club Champs saw a trip North to the Melmerby 10k. We had a whopping 37 Striders completing the race. Before we get into the individual honours the most important thing is that WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! As you probably all know the Melmerby 10k wasn’t only a race in the club champs but more importantly doubled up as the mob match vs Nidd Valley. The 2 clubs combined to make up about a quarter of the hole field. Nicola collected the shield on behalf of the club, and hopefully we will find a place for it in the cricket club. It was great to be part of such a big group wearing Yellow and Blue, supporting each other on and off the course. Melmerby was particularly good for that, as there was an out and back section. I would say that the mob match was summed up by two things, firstly the shouts in the starting pen of “Come on Nidd” and “Come on Striders”. The second was Kat’s amazing sprint finish as she caught and overtook a Nidd runner on the finish line, which created the biggest cheer of the day. Thanks also to those who didn’t run but came to support (I won’t mention names in case I missed anyone!)

Below are the official results.

Melmerby 10k Results

In the Female Vet’s category Kat is the first person, across all categories, to complete 7 events, which is the minimum amount to win. This means she stays at the top of the standings after her 4th place. Paula sits in 2nd with her 6th podium finish from six of the year. She was also one of the day’s 10k PBs (although frustratingly not on Strava!). We also saw the first Carla vs Nicola showdown of the year as they have been avoiding each other this year! They both came into event 7 with 2 wins each; Carla pipped Nicola and so now sits in 3rd place overall with Nicola in 4th. Karen moved up 3 places overall to 8th in the standings.

There was no change in the top 4 of the standings. Ewan remains on top with his 5th 2nd place of the year. Nik remains in 2nd after his 3rd 4th place of the year. Our defending champion kept his perfect record going with his 5th win in 5 events and stays in 3rd place. Ian took the last podium spot, (in the process overtaking me in the last 1k!) and has moved up 2 places to 5th. A shout out to Andrew H who bagged a PB. You’ll see in the results there were quite a few close finishes in terms of age grading, particularly Richard and Andy C and also Steve and Stewart. It was great to see Andrew T and Steve N make their first appearances in the club champs of 2024.

Sima took her 4th win from 4 events this year and in the process also won her age category, which included the prize of some sausages! Claire took 2nd place, which means she has come in the top 2 in all 4 of her events this year and also means she sits in 2nd. Olivia moves up 3 spots to 3rd overall with her 3rd podium of the year.

Paul climbs back to the top of the standings with a midtable finish. Martin and Dave also moved up a place to sit in the top 3 of the standings. Dave also got a PB, having only got one 2 weeks ago at Event 6! James I took top spot this time beating Tom by less than 10 seconds on age grading. James also took home his age category prize, and as the other Strider’s James present at the prize giving I am looking after! Tom took second place, as James and Tom, continue to only do the events, where they are both there! Dan C took 3rd place, his 2nd of the year; alongside Tom and James, he was one of the 3 striders in the top 10 of the race. A few other shout outs: Dan also got a PB, coming 4th in the category, It was great to see Craig Mitchell and Paul S make their first appearances in the club champs of 2024. (Along with me!) I also want to give Craig Mitchell an extra bit of kudos for being the only strider to complete the week’s triple of the 5k time trial, Dick Hudson’s and Melmerby.

The next event is Burton Leonard 10k on Sunday 19th May 2024
